Implant Clinic

Implant Clinic

We offer the service of implant installation without a referral from a family doctor. The implant is a long-term contraceptive method that can be kept in place for 3 years. It is a small plastic rod measuring 4 cm in length and 2 mm in diameter that is placed by a physician under the skin in the upper arm. It gradually releases a progestin that prevents ovulation and thickens the cervical mucus at the cervix to block the passage of sperm.

MAKING AN APPOINTMENT

You must call the clinic to make an appointment.

APPOINTMENT WITH A NURSE

You must have a first appointment on the phone with a nurse from the clinic before the implant insertion. This meeting allows the nurse to review your health history. She will explain how the implant works and can answer any questions you may have about it. She will give you all the instructions to follow before the insertion as well as a prescription to get the implant at the pharmacy.

IMPLANT INSERTION

The insertion of an implant is a simple and short procedure. You should expect a minimum of 30 minutes for this appointment. You do not need someone to come with you for your appointment. If you wish to be accompanied, you should know that this person cannot enter the consultation room. He or she will have to wait for you in the waiting room.

You will first be greeted by a nurse who will do a brief questionnaire to summarize your health history. You will then have the opportunity to do a self-collected sample for STI screening (chlamydia and gonorrhea).

You will then meet with the doctor who will install your implant. Most of the time, you are alone with the doctor during the procedure. If necessary, a pap test may also be performed by the doctor.

You may feel tingling or numbness in your arm, hand or fingers during the installation. Occasionally, some women may experience discomfort (vagal shock) in the minutes following the installation. For this reason, we ask that you remain in the waiting room for 10 minutes before leaving the clinic. We will intervene quickly to help you feel better if this happens.

FOLLOW UP

A follow up is strongly recommended 3 months after the insertion. Generally, your family doctor can do the follow up even if he or she does not install implants. If you do not have a family doctor or your doctor does not do implants follow up, we can ensure the follow up here at the Clinic.

If you have any questions or concerns before or after your implant insertion, please do not hesitate to contact us.
